LAND RECLAMATION WORKS AT
CONTAINER TERMINALS CT4 – CT9
As a pre-requisite to land reclamation works at container terminals CT 4 – 9, numerical modelling of South Klang Valley Straits and coastal morphology was undertaken to evaluate land reclamation and dredging works matching the port’s operational needs and capacity expansion requirements. Expansion of the port out into the sea was done in two stages, ie CT4 to CT6-1 and CT6-2 to CT9. The reclamation works involved placing approximately 18 million cubic metres of hydraulic sand fill as well as dredging, ground improvement and slope revetment works. Due to the extremely large sand requirement and the need to assess the effects, extensive hydraulic simulations were undertaken by HSS along the strait. Challenges included the need to avert major slope failures because modelling simulations indicated likely instability of the reclaimed area due to the planned high rate of filling. HSS, along with the appointed geotechnical specialist, T&T Konsult Sdn Bhd, modified the contractor’s plan of work to ensure the platform was built in a safe manner. HSS also conducted monitoring of the site to avoid slope failures.
