LEMAL AND RANTAU PANJANG FLOOD PROTECTION SCHEME
The Drainage & Irrigation Department prepared a brief for consultants to investigate options to alleviate perennial flooding at Lemal and Rantau Panjang in Kelantan State. Part of the brief involved upgrading a 1,000m section of the existing Lubok Stol – Rantau – Lanchang State road to act as a flood protection bund, with allied drainage works to protect the adjacent agricultural areas and surrounding towns. The brief called for there to be no increase in water levels in the Golok River attributable to the construction of a ford, floodway and bridge.
The services by HSS included field appraisals, hydraulic modelling/analysis and design of river improvement and protection works. A significant aspect of the project was land acquisition and resettlement of indigenous people affected by the project. This necessitated the carrying out of wide-ranging social studies including the preparation of land acquisition and resettlement plans, environmental impact assessment, the formulation of agricultural development plans and economic evaluation of sub-project options.
